Has there ever been such a confused and confusing game animal as the Javelina? Commonly known as the collared peccary, they are also called "musk hogs", "Javelina–hogs" , "brush pig", "Mexican pig" and of course, Javelina. The Javelina or “collared peccary” is abundant in the arid regions of West Texas thriving on all of our properties and offers a fun and exciting opportunity for the sportsman. These unique animals are often mistaken for members of the pig family and are actually rodents with a distant relation to the hippopotamus. The term collared peccary comes from the whitish-colored stripe that runs from the top of the shoulders to the middle of the brisket. Adult Javelina are generally black to grey flecked with white, giving them a peppered accent. While male Javelina are generally larger than females, Javelina of both sexes are about the same size.
